Senator Gillibrand Pays A Visit To Holley

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited the Eastern Orleans Community Center (EOCC) on Monday November 25th to help serve lunch at the soup kitchen and help pack Thanksgiving baskets.  EOCC is a CSBG funded program of Community Action of Orleans and Genesee.

When Senator Kirsten Gillibrand arrived at the Community Center, she was met with cheers as she walked through the doors ready to serve lunch to the 90+ people in attendance.  She quickly put on her gloves and apron and was ready and eager to serve macaroni and cheese, peas, tossed salad, biscuits and fruit.

The Senator commented “I’m very grateful that we have so many public servants and volunteers that do this work, I wanted to come help them do this work that they do every day.”  The Community Center soup kitchen served 9,400 lunches last year.

Senator Gillibrand also helped pack Thanksgiving baskets for low-income residents in the Eastern end of Orleans County.  As she talked to people who arrived to receive a basket, she asked what the help means to their families.  One response was “This is our Thanksgiving dinner, without the help from the Center we would not have a Turkey for Thanksgiving.” The Center provided 135 baskets this year.

As the Senator looked around the Center she was amazed by the number of volunteers who give their time, some on a daily basis, to assist Center Coordinator Deb Rothmund who is the only paid staff.

Upon departure, the Senator thanked the Salvation Army bell ringers who were outside the Center and put money in the kettle.

According to her staff, she was happy to be able to dig right in and help people.
