How Weatherization Works…

The purpose of the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is to install energy efficiency measures in the homes of income-eligible persons. Funds are targeted to the most cost- effective conservation measures, determined from an on-site energy audit of the building.

In New York, Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) administers the program through a network of highly skilled subgrantees that provide program services in each of the state’s 62 counties. The subgrantee for Orleans & Genesee County is Community Action of Orleans & Genesee’s Weatherization Assistance Program. Weatherization is a free service to our customers who qualify. (see income guidelines below) We provide energy-efficiency services through our own trained crews and/or by subcontracting work to local contractors if needed. Energy-efficiency measures include air sealing to prevent air infiltration and reduce drafts, insulation to reduce heat loss, and modifications to heating systems.

The program assists all types of housing units: single-family homes, mobile homes, and small apartment buildings. Owners of rental property, that have income eligible tenants, are required by NY State to invest a minimum of 25% of the work scope.

Weatherization is designed to help reduce the energy burden on your family. We also give your family peace of mind knowing that your home is free from the dangers of carbon-monoxide by testing all appliances before & after the work is completed.
